The BRIDGES ‘Lending Library’

The BRIDGES 'Lending Library'

The BRIDGES team at Access to Business never know where the next idea will come from or what will spark a new initiative. This lead to The Lending Library that we have set up at Access to Business.

A recently signed up a participant who came onto the BRIDGES programme, and while completing his initial contact document, I asked him about his ID and what we need to sign him onto the project. He said, he had not even got ID to join his local library! This was said as a joke, however this struck a chord with me. How many people could not join their local Library due to not having identity documents? It was with this in mind I put the word out around our fantastic Access to Business team and asked them if they thought it would be a good idea to set up A Lending Library within Access to Business. The rules are simple:-

·         Look at the books we have to offer.

·         Take up to two books.

·         Read them at your own pace.

·         Return the books and promote the service and our project to others.

An email went out asking for people to donate books that they may have lying around at home and bring them into the library. Within 48 hours of the request, I was delighted to have receive over 50 books! The selection of books was amazing, ranging from Autobiographies, True Crime to Cookbooks and many more.

In the last two days since the books were put out in our reception area, books have left Access to Business to their temporary home for participants to enjoy at their own pace.

We are delighted to see the uptake and hope this continues, giving people the opportunity to get into reading.

– Keith Fitzsimons (BRIDGES Outreach Business Advisor)

Creating New Roles Under The Kickstart Scheme

Access to Business creating new roles under the Kickstart Scheme

The Government Kickstart Scheme in Great Britain funded the direct creation of high quality jobs for young people at the highest risk of long-term unemployment. It gives young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work. The Kickstart helped to create hundreds of thousands of high quality 6-month jobs aimed at those aged 16 to 24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment. FISCAL Project Completion

Employment Support

FISCAL Project Completion

Providing the opportunity to improve your IT, financial and interview skills over 3 weeks through a range of practical workshops to support you in your job search.

The Project Overview

The FISCAL Project

After an intense but rewarding 6 months, our FISCAL project has now come to an end.

Launched in August 2019 by Wolverhampton Learning Platform CIC and funded by The Black Country ESF Community Grant, its aim was to support 30 economically inactive beneficiaries with a variety of barriers to improve their skills, address and overcome their barriers, to secure employment or process into further education.

The project was carried out by the 5 partner organisations of the WLP, it focused on financial education, money management, better off in work calculations, confidence building, goal setting and targeted job search.

The Project Details

All-around Success!

The beneficiaries involved have shown marked improvements in their personal confidence and skill levels, this has led onto employment for some (Royal Mail, Community Care Roles, Office Admin,), volunteering for others (at Access2Business, Bridging The Gap, Kitchen Volunteer) and further education/training for many.

Success can be measured in many ways, qualifications, employment, are of course important, however the softer outcomes such as confidence building, teamwork, goal setting can make a difference in people’s lives. Building their self-esteem and self-belief, can go a long way to help find the employment they are looking for.

The Fiscal project helped in these areas as it was able to devote more time to support clients as a group or on 1-2-1 basis, in addition, the group developed a strong supportive bond and helped each other where needed.

During this program, 30 beneficiaries have been supported, with 7/8 of these going into paid employment, another 17 have progressed into further education or training to continue their journey towards employment.

FISCAL Workshop

The Project Details

The FISCAL Project

FISCAL works to empower beneficiaries to improve their financial education, money management, budgeting skills and financial confidence through workshops and one-to-one support. Sessions include how to be ‘better off in work or self-employment’. The project assist beneficiaries to gain skills and look for work.

The project runs 5 separate programmes with each of the 5 partners delivering one programme each in their identified location.

Beneficiaries learn financial management skills including and how to be less reliant on benefits. They discover ways to shop on a budget, food preparation on a budget and ways in which they can reduce spending. Each beneficiary is introduced to the Money Advice Service website to make them aware of the MAS budget calculators and to understand the benefits of earning income through employment.
