Get Online Week 2023

Another successful UK Get Online Week at Access to Business!

Another brilliant Get Online Week draws to a close!

Access to Business held a variety of great workshops throughout the week to help Wolverhampton residents get more from their digital devices and the internet!

We kicked off the week with a workshop on digital employment skills, creating digital CVs and finding jobs online!

The rest of the week followed the schedule of our wonderful Inclusive Futures programme, teaching people the basics of using computers, searching the web and using IT to help save money online!

We also helped our lovely client Amen by gifting her with a brand new laptop that she can now use to complete her education and grow her skills!

Disability History Month

We are celebrating Disability History Month

Access to Business began as a small project in 2002 with three staff working in partnership with West Park Hospital and partners from across the Black Country on an EU funded ‘Equal’ Project.  Our Wolverhampton project supported disabled people/those with health issues/cognitive impairments to gain skills and confidence and work.

The project ran for 4 years during which time A2B registered as a Charity and focussed on supporting more disabled people into skills, work or self-employment.  Our Equal project was an outstanding success during which we took 8 of our disabled beneficiaries to European Parliament in Brussels where they spoke to MEP’s about how the project had supported them and opened up new opportunities for them.  One of our amazing ‘Equal’ beneficiaries was a young man (Kevin) who, after leaving school,  had joined the Army and was posted overseas where he was involved in a serious accident and sustained a severe brain injury resulting in him having a long period of rehabilitation.  West Park eventually referred him to us where he stayed for a long time to help him to regain his confidence.  While with us he developed our ‘Access 4 All (A4A)’ beneficiary group and raised funds to arrange events and social visits to promote further social inclusion for those on our project.  A4A did many amazing things and great friendships were formed while individuals gained confidence and learned new skills.

Following on from our Equal project we secured Lottery funding to meet the growing demand for our services and we moved into new premises.

Today, 20 years later, we now employ 23 members of staff and support in excess of 1500 people each year.  We continue to specialise in supporting disabled people/those with health issues.  48% of our staff team have a disability and/or health issue and 52% of our staff (and one trustee) are former beneficiaries.

We are proud of all that we have achieved over the years and how we have continued to represent and support disabled people.  A2B has DWP Level 3 Disability Leader Status thanks to the hard work and dedication of our amazing staff team and Board of Trustees.

We still hear from Kevin occasionally when he needs a helping hand.  Some years ago he came back to us as he was setting up his own business.  I see him regularly now as he collects children from the same school that my Grandchildren attend.   Kevin now runs his own successful Garden Design business and is also undertaking a degree in Horticulture.

We continue to support and empower disabled people/those with health issues and achieve great results for our beneficiaries

Jobs, Skills And Self-Employment Event At The Molineux

Jobs, Skills And Self-Employment Event At The Molineux

Our Jobs, Skills and Self-Employment Event was a storming success! We were all so relived to get back to what we love doing best, showcasing our great work which we have done across the city, networking with partners and singing our praises for Self-Employment.

The event gave us the great opportunity to have our past successful clients take centre stage and talk about how they came about Access to Business and the support they received to get them where they are today.

On the day we had 4 past clients share their stories of their self-employment journey so far. All our speakers were excellent and gave very motivational speeches which we hope will inspire people to go self-employed themselves

Creating New Roles Under The Kickstart Scheme

Access to Business creating new roles under the Kickstart Scheme

The Government Kickstart Scheme in Great Britain funded the direct creation of high quality jobs for young people at the highest risk of long-term unemployment. It gives young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work. The Kickstart helped to create hundreds of thousands of high quality 6-month jobs aimed at those aged 16 to 24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment. Access to Business were proud to create four new positions as part of  the  Government Kickstart Scheme in 2021 working with YMCA as a programme Gateway. As part of the scheme we hosted four young people over 2021-2022 to help them improve their employment opportunities.

Global Learning Success!

Global Learning Success!

The Global Learning Festival has finished for 2020 but we still have a range of great learning opportunities available!

An International Event

During a globally challenging time, the Global Learning Festival’s goal was to provide unity and connection to communities all over the world.

1st September marked the beginning of the Global Learning Festival 2020!
Access to Business, along with wide range of libraries, universities and educators participated in the global online event to promote unity and connective learning.

As part of our contribution, A2B hosted four online webinars across the 1st – 4th September with ticket sales through Eventbrite. The workshops (Money Matters, Designing in Canva, Essential ICT Skills for Beginners and Interview Skills) had themes centred on finance, business brand design, IT Skills, and job interview etiquette.

RAISE advisor Gary Lees started the week off with Money Matters, where attendees could learn tips and tricks to manage their finances. Wednesday’s Designing in Canva session was held by RAISE Project Co-ordinator, Jim Brennan, giving the audience a full tutorial of how to get the best out the design software.

Black Country Futures lead, Emma Miller introduced helpful PC skills in Essential IT Skills for Beginners, while employment advisor, Simon Moore finished the week sharing the key secrets to land the job you want at the interview stage. It was great to have such an international audience – our attendees ranged from the UK to Australia and Vietnam!

The festival might be over, but we’ve got more free courses then ever coming up!
Head over to our Online Training Courses page to find the times and dates of all our self-employment and employment workshops. Check out our social media pages below to keep track of all our upcoming events and good news!
