The West Midlands Social Enterprise Boost Fund

The West Midlands Social Enterprise Boost Fund

The West Midlands Social Enterprise Boost Fund (SEBFWestMids) is pleased to announce that we are working with DCMS to kick start and accelerate social enterprise activity in Wolverhampton and Sandwell. The SEB Fund will run from March 2023 – March 2025 across County Durham, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Thanet, Sandwell and Wolverhampton.

The Fund aims to grow and sustain the social enterprise sector in local areas and to share evidence on the impact of the Fund on social enterprises and local areas. The West Midlands Social Enterprise Boost Fund will offer a range of grants and targeted business support to help new and existing social enterprises start up, scale up and grow, creating positive social and environmental impact. Speaking about the launch of the partnership, Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, said: “This partnership is a fantastic opportunity for social enterprises in the West Midlands to access the funding and support they need to grow and thrive. We are committed to building a sustainable and inclusive social economy that benefits everyone, and social enterprises play a crucial role in achieving that goal. It is the WMCA’s aim to double the size of the social economy within the next 10 years – and i-SE and their partners can make a major contribution to that ambition through this programme.”

Josie Kelly, CEO of Access to Business based in Wolverhampton added “We are delighted to be the Wolverhampton delivery partner in this exciting initiative.  We have a real passion for Social Enterprise growth in our Region and understand the opportunities Social Enterprise can provide in local communities.  Alongside our own staff roles we are also hosting the Project Manager job-share roles in Wolverhampton and we will be working closely with Birmingham and Sandwell colleagues and our Wolverhampton project partner WVCA who will be responsible for managing and distributing the Wolverhampton project grants to successful local Social Enterprises”.

Ian Darch, CEO of Wolverhampton Voluntary and Community Action, on hearing the news said: “The projects aim of growing, developing and sustaining social enterprises is a great opportunity for our City and its citizens.  We are really looking forward to delivering this important work with our local partners and to making a really positive impact over the next two years”.

Cathy Brown, CEO of iSE added: “We are thrilled to be leading the SEBFWestMids partnership in this exciting initiative. We know that social enterprises can create real change in communities across the region, and we are all excited to support them in achieving their goals.” The West Midlands Social Enterprise Boost Fund Programme is now open for expressions of interest. Disability History Month

We are celebrating Disability History Month

Access to Business began as a small project in 2002 with three staff working in partnership with West Park Hospital and partners from across the Black Country on an EU funded ‘Equal’ Project.  Our Wolverhampton project supported disabled people/those with health issues/cognitive impairments to gain skills and confidence and work.

The project ran for 4 years during which time A2B registered as a Charity and focussed on supporting more disabled people into skills, work or self-employment.  Our Equal project was an outstanding success during which we took 8 of our disabled beneficiaries to European Parliament in Brussels where they spoke to MEP’s about how the project had supported them and opened up new opportunities for them.  One of our amazing ‘Equal’ beneficiaries was a young man (Kevin) who, after leaving school,  had joined the Army and was posted overseas where he was involved in a serious accident and sustained a severe brain injury resulting in him having a long period of rehabilitation.  West Park eventually referred him to us where he stayed for a long time to help him to regain his confidence.  While with us he developed our ‘Access 4 All (A4A)’ beneficiary group and raised funds to arrange events and social visits to promote further social inclusion for those on our project.  A4A did many amazing things and great friendships were formed while individuals gained confidence and learned new skills.

Following on from our Equal project we secured Lottery funding to meet the growing demand for our services and we moved into new premises.

Today, 20 years later, we now employ 23 members of staff and support in excess of 1500 people each year.  We continue to specialise in supporting disabled people/those with health issues.  48% of our staff team have a disability and/or health issue and 52% of our staff (and one trustee) are former beneficiaries.

We are proud of all that we have achieved over the years and how we have continued to represent and support disabled people.  A2B has DWP Level 3 Disability Leader Status thanks to the hard work and dedication of our amazing staff team and Board of Trustees.

We still hear from Kevin occasionally when he needs a helping hand.  Some years ago he came back to us as he was setting up his own business.  I see him regularly now as he collects children from the same school that my Grandchildren attend.   Kevin now runs his own successful Garden Design business and is also undertaking a degree in Horticulture.

We continue to support and empower disabled people/those with health issues and achieve great results for our beneficiaries

Jobs, Skills And Self-Employment Event At The Molineux

Jobs, Skills And Self-Employment Event At The Molineux

Our Jobs, Skills and Self-Employment Event was a storming success! We were all so relived to get back to what we love doing best, showcasing our great work which we have done across the city, networking with partners and singing our praises for Self-Employment.

The event gave us the great opportunity to have our past successful clients take centre stage and talk about how they came about Access to Business and the support they received to get them where they are today.

On the day we had 4 past clients share their stories of their self-employment journey so far. All our speakers were excellent and gave very motivational speeches which we hope will inspire people to go self-employed themselves

The BRIDGES ‘Lending Library’

The BRIDGES 'Lending Library'

The BRIDGES team at Access to Business never know where the next idea will come from or what will spark a new initiative. This lead to The Lending Library that we have set up at Access to Business.

A recently signed up a participant who came onto the BRIDGES programme, and while completing his initial contact document, I asked him about his ID and what we need to sign him onto the project. He said, he had not even got ID to join his local library! This was said as a joke, however this struck a chord with me. How many people could not join their local Library due to not having identity documents? It was with this in mind I put the word out around our fantastic Access to Business team and asked them if they thought it would be a good idea to set up A Lending Library within Access to Business. The rules are simple:-

·         Look at the books we have to offer.

·         Take up to two books.

·         Read them at your own pace.

·         Return the books and promote the service and our project to others.

An email went out asking for people to donate books that they may have lying around at home and bring them into the library. Within 48 hours of the request, I was delighted to have receive over 50 books! The selection of books was amazing, ranging from Autobiographies, True Crime to Cookbooks and many more.

In the last two days since the books were put out in our reception area, books have left Access to Business to their temporary home for participants to enjoy at their own pace.

We are delighted to see the uptake and hope this continues, giving people the opportunity to get into reading.

– Keith Fitzsimons (BRIDGES Outreach Business Advisor)

Creating New Roles Under The Kickstart Scheme

Access to Business creating new roles under the Kickstart Scheme

The Government Kickstart Scheme in Great Britain funded the direct creation of high quality jobs for young people at the highest risk of long-term unemployment. It gives young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work. The Kickstart helped to create hundreds of thousands of high quality 6-month jobs aimed at those aged 16 to 24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment. Access to Business were proud to create four new positions as part of  the  Government Kickstart Scheme in 2021 working with YMCA as a programme Gateway. As part of the scheme we hosted four young people over 2021-2022 to help them improve their employment opportunities.
