Creating New Roles Under The Kickstart Scheme

Access to Business creating new roles under the Kickstart Scheme

The Government Kickstart Scheme in Great Britain funded the direct creation of high quality jobs for young people at the highest risk of long-term unemployment. It gives young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work. The Kickstart helped to create hundreds of thousands of high quality 6-month jobs aimed at those aged 16 to 24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment. Access to Business were proud to create four new positions as part of  the  Government Kickstart Scheme in 2021 working with YMCA as a programme Gateway. As part of the scheme we hosted four young people over 2021-2022 to help them improve their employment opportunities.

Council Guidance on Business Grants Eligibility

NEWS FROM WOLVERHAMPTON COUNCIL

Business Grants Eligibility

City of Wolverhampton Council will start sending letters and emails from Friday 27th March 2020 to the thousands of city businesses eligible to receive grants from the Government’s Small Business Grant Fund and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund.

The communication will provide guidance about how to go online to provide information so that the following grants can be paid:

  • Small business grant funding of £10,000 for all business in receipt of small business rate relief or rural rate relief, and have a rateable value of £15,000 or less

  • Grant funding of £10,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value of £15,000 or below

  • Grant funding of £25,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value between £15,001 and £51,999

The grant funding is expected to be with the council on April 1, 2020, at which point claims can start being paid.

Councillor Harman Banger, Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “Our small and medium businesses are critical to our local economy and we appreciate what a hugely challenging time this is for them.

“Our small and medium businesses are critical to our local economy and we appreciate what a hugely challenging time this is for them.

We are doing everything in our power to make the process of accessing these vital grants as smooth as possible and I would urge businesses to pay close to attention to the detail in the letter/email.

We have staff on hand to support with any help and advice businesses may need in completing their online applications.”

Councillor Harman Banger

Cabinet Member for City Economy

A 12-month business rates holiday for all retail, hospitality, leisure and nursery businesses in England has also been announced by the Government.

Businesses who have been identified as potential recipients of the additional business rate relief measures will be excluded from the direct debit payment request for April 1, 2020.

The council’s Business Rates Team is also taking the following steps in relation to the recovery of business rates:

  • Suspending court action for recovery of business rates after March 19

  • Issuing reminder notices to encourage contact from businesses, so that we can understand their individual situation

  • Suspending the issue of new cases for enforcement agent action

  • Negotiating repayments where possible and/or agree to a hold in recovery action for a period where businesses are struggling

Women's Enterprise Skills Training

The WEST Project

Access to Business is launching a new programme to support disadvantaged women in their efforts to start their own enterprises.

The Project Overview

The WEST Project

Access to Business have teamed up with NatWest Bank to support more women to start a business.

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training (WEST) Midland Project will see 200 women from across Wolverhampton and Dudley take part in a one-day workshop to get them thinking about business and build their confidence.

The project will also support women with coaching, mentoring and collaboration to help them succeed, and will be followed by monthly networking events to help them develop their business ideas further.

The Project Details

West Enterprise Skills Training

The programme will cover subjects such as business budgeting, marketing and social media use, ensuring your business is legal, access to networking and business support organisations, and financing your business.

Access to Business is partnering with NatWest for a session about crowdfunding and how this type of funding can benefit new businesses. Earlier this year NatWest launched its Back Her Business Crowdfunder which aims to assist female-led businesses in their crowdfunding efforts as part of the bank’s wider ambition to reduce the gender gap associated with women starting their own businesses.

It is hoped that by the end of the one-year programme, 20 new businesses will be created.

The first in a series of our WEST (Women’s Enterprise Skills Training) workshops highlighted the opportunities on how to raise money for a new business through crowdfunding via Back Her Business: 👉 natwestbackherbusiness.co.uk

For More Support

If you are interested in the WEST Project please contact Carole Taylor on 01902 572398 or carole@access2business.co.uk

“The WEST programme is for women from all backgrounds. They may be struggling to find a job or are simply needing a bit of support to get their business going. They may be single parents or women with a lack of confidence for various reasons. We want to give them that confidence to take that next step and join the business world.”

“Access to Business is a fantastic charity that is doing some incredibly work across the Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The WEST programme is an exciting project that has been specifically designed to help women gain confidence and build new businesses which will no doubt benefit the communities they operate in. We are delighted to work with them as part of our Back Her Business Crowdfunder and look forward to seeing how these businesses develop.”
